The Sixth Form Centre in Guernsey were presented with three bikes at the launch of a bike loan scheme on Friday 2nd October which is part of ambitious wider plans conceived as part of Better Journeys Project “Fund for Schools”. This was an initiative set up to help schools put in infrastructure or projects that support and encourage alternative travel options to free them from traffic.

Funding was also secured from the M&S Community Fund and thanks to a discount from Adventure Cycles making ait a true community effort.

"The students at the Sixth Form Centre impressed us with their detailed and considered plans when they applied and it's brilliant to see them come to fruition. They care about this and it shows." said Rollo de Sausmarez, Director of The Better Journeys Project.

The active travel idea was originally presented by Monty Desforges, Head of the Active Travel group at the school and who recently received a Yellow Guernsey by the Health Improvement Commission and Better Journeys for his energy and commitment to promoting active travel. The group conducted surveys to find out what students’ barriers to cycling were and used these results to form the application. Gazelle Adaya, senior prefect of events and active travel will take over the project and receive the bikes, helmets and locks, last Friday.

The full proposal includes provision of bikes to borrow using a new booking system.

‘By providing students with the opportunity to borrow bikes for themselves, the individual investment barrier of purchasing a bike is overcome, ensuring active travel is available for all students, regardless of their financial situation,’ said Alex Costen, Be Active lead at the Health Improvement Commission.

The group has also been involved in installing a new drying room, to directly address barriers to active travel that students have raised.

The Better Journeys Project Fund for Schools is made possible by the support of their 2025 Sponsor Appleby Global, £1,500 from The Health Improvement Commission and the continued support of The Tom Dorey Eco-Legacy. M&S have also provided sponsorship to enable the purchase of the bikes.

Six schools applied for the £3,000 fund in Guernsey, with the judges choosing to split the money between 3 projects from Vauvert, the Sixth Form Centre and Ladies College following careful consideration.

The 2027 Fund for School initiative will be launching soon, offering further financial incentives for schools to make cycling, walking and scooting more accessible, convenient and safe.
