As the world famous Tour de France commences, the Health Improvement Commission with support from the Better Journeys Project has re-launched a campaign called the Yellow Guernsey Award.
Based on a campaign delivered by the charity Cycling UK, where yellow jumpers are given to people leading the way as an active travel role model in their communities - much like the leader of the Tour de France is given a yellow jersey to wear - our winning role models will be awarded a yellow Guernsey!
Active Travel Officer, Amy Woollaston said “We are thrilled to relaunch this fabulous initiative thanks to generous support from the Tom Dorey Eco Legacy & Mourants via the Better Journeys Project, as it is giving something back to those who, just like Tom (a previous Yellow Guernsey winner whose life tragically ended far too early), campaign to make cycling for transport the norm.”
Tom Dorey, whose genius ideas, enthusiasm, and tireless advocacy for cycling as everyday transport inspired so many across the island. Tragically, Tom has since passed away, but his legacy lives on through the Tom Dorey Eco Legacy, which supports the work of the Better Journeys Project and is funding the Yellow Guernseys.
Rollo de Sausmarez, Director of the Better Journeys Project said, “The biggest change is often led by inspiration from others. The Yellow Guernsey Award will help more people be inspired by those brilliant people who are already showing that “better journeys” make for a better island – for everyone.”
The first winner of the Yellow Guernsey Award 2026 will be announced at 9am on Friday 3rd July at Le Tricoteur in St Peters. “We’re so excited to present this award as the creative bunch at Le Tricoteur have knitted a stand-out Guernsey using a bespoke ‘Sunburst Yellow’ yarn exclusively for the active travel role models amongst us.” said Amy.
If you know of someone who deserves a Yellow Guernsey, please get in touch with amy.woollaston@healthimprovement.gg and they will be considered for the next award in the autumn.
